Build a low hollow box
A display plinth raises a small decorative object and gives it visual space. This concept is deliberately low and intended for lightweight items. It is not a seat, step, or support for a valuable heavy object. A hollow plywood construction reduces weight and gives you practice aligning visible faces.
The example has a 200 × 200 mm footprint and an overall height of 89 mm. Its top sits over four walls, leaving the underside open. Use measured 9 mm plywood and recalculate the shorter wall lengths if the stock differs.
- Top: 200 × 200 × 9 mm.
- Front and back: two 200 × 80 × 9 mm pieces.
- Sides: two 182 × 80 × 9 mm pieces.
Choose the visible edge treatment
The front and back overlap the side ends, so the side plywood edges are hidden from the main viewing direction. The top’s plywood edge remains visible. You can embrace that layered appearance or add an appropriate edge treatment, but decide before final sizing.
If adding edge banding, its thickness changes the finished footprint. Do not attach it later and expect the top to remain flush with the walls. A small deliberate overhang can be easier to make consistent than an accidentally almost-flush edge.
Assemble a square shell
Sand the inside faces and mark the outward faces. Dry-fit the walls on a flat surface and check both diagonals. Glue the corners with a suitable adhesive and use temporary square blocks to keep the shape aligned.
After the wall assembly cures, check the upper edges with a straightedge. The top should contact all four walls without rocking. Correct a high wall carefully rather than using clamps to bend the top down. Glue the top with evenly distributed pressure and make sure the outside edges remain aligned.
Inspect the contact with the table
Set the plinth on a flat surface and press gently at each corner. If it rocks, the bottom edges are not coplanar or the shell twisted during assembly. Small equal feet can protect a surface, but they should not disguise a severely distorted box.
Use the plinth only after adhesive and finish have cured. Place the intended lightweight object in the center and check for movement. Keep the arrangement low and away from children or pets that may climb or pull on it. A hollow box that looks substantial does not have an established load rating.
What to take with you
- A hollow form can look substantial without being load rated.
- Visible-edge decisions affect final dimensions.
- The top needs even support from all four walls.
A few good questions
Can I use it as a plant stand?
Only for a small, contained plant after evaluating moisture and weight. This display concept is not designed for a heavy pot or wet saucer.
Why does the top show a gap?
One or more wall edges may be low or out of square. Fit the supporting edges before gluing rather than filling a structural gap with finish.
