What is a board foot?
A board foot is a unit of volume: a piece 1 inch thick, 12 inches wide, and 12 inches long. It is not the same as a linear foot. A thicker or wider board contains more board feet at the same length.
For example, four boards each measuring 1 inch × 6 inches × 8 feet contain 16 board feet. Adding a 15% allowance brings the planning total to 18.4 board feet. In metric mode, the calculator converts dimensions to inches and feet before applying the same formula.
Give the layout the last word.
A volume estimate cannot guarantee that your parts will fit. Draw the individual parts on the available board sizes, account for saw kerfs, and work around knots or splits. A long clear part may require more stock than its volume suggests.
