Measure the spools before choosing the axle
Ribbon spools differ in both width and center-hole diameter. Gather the spools you intend to use and measure the widest combination. Choose a smooth dowel that passes freely through their centers, then check that the spools can rotate without their cardboard sides rubbing neighboring parts.
This tabletop concept has two end supports and a removable horizontal dowel. It is intended for light ribbon, not heavy rolls or a mechanism that needs strong pulling force.
- Base: 300 × 120 × 18 mm.
- End supports: two 100 × 120 × 18 mm pieces.
- Axle: a smooth dowel about 290 mm long, diameter matched to the spools.
- Two small removable spacers, sized after a trial assembly.
Create a pair of matching supports
Stand the end supports on the base near its ends. Their inner spacing depends on the actual placement; if they are flush with the base ends, 18 mm supports leave 264 mm between inside faces. Keep the loaded spool group narrower than that space.
Mark the axle location at the same height on both supports. A through-hole allows the dowel to slide out sideways. Leave enough solid wood above and around the hole, and make sure the largest spool clears the base when mounted. If it does not, increase support height before cutting holes.
Align before fastening
Clamp the supports together with their reference edges aligned and transfer the axle marks accurately. Drill using secure support and a backing block to reduce breakout. Separate the pieces and test the axle through both before attaching them to the base.
Dry-fit the stand and check that the dowel is parallel to the base. Attach the supports with suitable wood adhesive and predrilled screws from underneath, selecting lengths that remain safely within the wood. Keep screw heads flush so the base sits flat. Fit simple removable spacers to stop spools rubbing the supports.
Keep dispensing controlled
After curing, load a few spools and pull a short length of ribbon gently. If the stand slides, add suitable nonslip pads or enlarge the base. Do not solve sliding by pulling harder against a loosely assembled structure.
Keep the axle ends smooth and avoid adding sharp cutting blades to the stand. Cut ribbon separately with an appropriate tool. Store the stand where protruding dowel ends cannot catch clothing. The lift-out axle makes reloading easy, but it also means the stand should not be carried by the dowel.
What to take with you
- Spool diameter determines axle height.
- Matching reference edges help align paired holes.
- A removable axle should not double as a carrying handle.
A few good questions
Can I add several axles?
Possibly, but each row needs spool clearance and the stand needs a fresh stability assessment. A taller version is not simply the same project repeated upward.
Why does a spool drag?
Check whether its sides touch a support or neighboring spool. Add appropriate spacers and verify that the axle is straight and smooth.
